Jorge García-Granados

Originally from Lima, Peru, Jorge received a BA in Linguistics and Literature in 1996 and an MA in Linguistics in 2007, both from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

His primary research interests are Peruvian colonial theatre written in Quechua and its relationship with some archetypal characters in the Spanish Golden Age literature, such as a trickster or a pícaro. Additionally, Jorge is interested in how the sixteenth-century Spanish picaresque novel elements are reinterpreted in colonial Peruvian literature. In his doctoral dissertation, “The Journey of Three Andean Fausts: Dramas of Damnation in eighteenth-century Colonial Peru,” he examines the eighteenth-century Quechua dramas that portray a devil’s bargain. He has been awarded the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship 2020-2021 and the John Carter Brown Library Short-Term Fellowship José Amor y Vázquez 2021-2022. In March of 2023, he visited the Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia to directly examine a 1715 colonial treatise, Luçerna Yndyca (A Guiding Light to the Indians) by the Limeño clergyman Esteban Sancho de Melgar. He is preparing an article about this unattended work.

He has ample experience with teaching. He has taught Span 3050 (Introduction to Spanish Linguistics), Span 3011 (Spanish Grammar, Composition, and Comprehension for Heritage Speakers), and Span 3020 (Advanced Composition and Conversation). Besides, he designed Span 2002e (Online Intermediate Spanish II).

Currently, he serves as a Research/Editorial Consultant for the Bulletin of the Comediantes and as a Director for UGA en Buenos Aires-Fall 2024.
