Distinguished Research Professor of Spanish Emeritus

Dr. José Luis Gómez-Martínez has research interests in hypertext, the theory of the essay, Hispanic non-fiction prose, Latin American thought, and Latin American fiction. He is the author of several books, including Américo Castro y el origen de los españoles: Historia de una polémica (Gredos, 1975), Bolivia: un pueblo en busca de su identidad (La Paz, 1988), Teoría del ensayo (2nd. ed., UNAM, 1992), Pensamiento de la liberación. Proyección de Ortega en Iberoamérica (Madrid, 1996), Leopoldo Zea (Madrid, 1997), Más allá de la pos-modernidad. El discurso antrópico y su práxis en la cultura iberoamericana (Madrid, 1999), and the editor of collections of essays on Latin American thought (Bolivia: 1952-1986, 1986; Chile: 1968-1988, 1988; España: 1975-1990, 1991), and has published numerous articles on the above topics of research.

Gómez-Martínez has served as the President of SILAT and is on the editorial board of several periodicals. He is a Guggenheim Fellow, the recipient of the 1989 Sturgis Leavitt Prize, and the Albert Crist-Janer Award, and Membro Correspondente of the Academia Brasileira de Folosofia.
