Professor of French

Jan Pendergrass specializes in Renaissance humanism, humanist pedagogy, epistolography and paleography. He received a master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Munich in 1981 and a doctorate from the University François-Rabelais (Tours, France) in 1987. He has published editions and commentaries of the neo-Latin correspondence of Antoine Arlier (Droz, 1990) and Jean de Pins (Droz, 2007) and is co-author of Images et lieux de mémoire d'un étudiant du XVIe siècle (Trédaniel, 1991). His recent edition and commentary of Jean de Langeac’s Letters and Papers is also now in print (Droz, 2016). And work is progressing toward an edition of Claude Dodieu's letters and documents from the same general period (1527-1557).

Research Interests:

Specialization in Renaissance humanism, humanist pedagogy, epistolography and paleography. Current research project: Claude Dodieu: Lettres et papiers (working title).
