Two of our Sigma Delta Pi members, Karishma Dayani and Emily Gibson, have been awarded 2016 Sigma Delta Pi Undergraduate Study Abroad Awards of $2,500. They were selected for these awards from a very competitive pool of applicants from all over the U.S. There were only 16 awards made, and UGA was the only institution with TWO winners. Ms. Dayani will be joining the UGA en España program in Valencia, and Ms.
Juliano Saccomani will speak on "Comic Strips and Criticism: Angeli and His Depiction of Brazilian Society" and Javier Soler will discuss "Bob Marley' s Religious Performance at the 1978 One Love & Peace Concert in Kingston, Jamaica."
Lígia Bezerra is an Assistant Professor at Spelman College, where she is the director of the Portuguese program. She has a PhD in Portuguese with a minor in Culture Studies from Indiana University, an MA in Portuguese from the University of New Mexico, an MA in Linguistics from the Federal University of Ceará, and a BA in Letras with a double major in Portuguese and English from the Federal University of Ceará as well. Her research focuses on contemporary Latin American literature and culture, consumer culture, and everyday life.
