TIMOTHY GUPTON Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Timothy Gupton comes to UGA from the University of Iowa, where he completed his dissertation entitled “The syntax-information structure interface: subjects and clausal word order in Galician”. His primary research interest is theoretical syntax, in particular the syntax of subjects, clitics and left-peripheral elements. He employs a variety of experimental methods based primarily on second language acquisition research in order to elicit quantitative psycholinguistic grammar judgments from a larger number of participants than in typical theoretical syntactic research. These methods are crucial tools that he is working to refine and develop. His current research interests include the prosody of contrast, quantifier raising and scope relations, and the syntax-discourse-information structure interface. Languages of particular interest to him are Galician, Spanish, European Portuguese, Greek, and Catalan, but he has also worked with English, Mandarin Chinese and Korean.
