EMILY SAHAKIAN

Assistant Professor of French
dual Ph.D., Northwestern University and École des hautes études en sciences sociales

Emily Sahakian's current research investigates French Caribbean women playwrights and the production and reception of their plays at Ubu Repertory Theater, a pioneering French-American theatre of New York. She comes to UGA from Northwestern University, where she recently completed a dual Ph.D. with the École des hautes études en sciences sociales. Her dissertation, "French Caribbean Women's Theatre: Trauma, Slavery, and Transcultural Performance," explores how theatre dramatizes cultural memory and how narratives of trauma are translated through intercultural performance. It was awarded the highest distinction “Très honorable avec les félicitations du jury,” by the École des hautes études en sciences sociales. Her research on Martinican woman ethno-dramatist Ina Césaire and the postcolonial reception of universalism and difference at the original 1983 production of Césaire's play Mémoires d'Isles appeared in a special issue of Theatre Survey on African and Afro-Caribbean performance. Professor Sahakian holds a Maîtrise degree from the Université de Paris III and a B.A. in Theatre and French from Grinnell College. Her bilingual play dealing with French-American relations, Cowboys in Old Europe, was produced at the Cité Universitaire in Paris.
