“The role of partitivity, specificity and Set theory in CLLD Quantified Expressions”

Abstract:

Quantified expressions (QPs) in Romance have been widely argued to resist Clitic left dislocation (CLLD); I provide novel evidence from Spanish showing curious asymmetries between bare, indefinite and negative QPs, some of which may occasionally appear topicalized with a resumptive clitic. I also provide an explanatory account of CLLD QPs that falls out straightforwardly from Suñer’s (1988) Matching Principle as well as the mathematical principles of Set theory, showing evidence that CLLD QPs can have either an overt or a covert resumptive clitic.
