There are four classes of membership: Active, Honorary, Associate, and Alumni.

Active membership: Active members are undergraduate and graduate students who will be nominated based on high scholarship and have taken or are currently taking a Portuguese class at the 3000 level or above. “High Scholarship” shall have a minimum of a 3.5 cumulative GPA (on a 4.00 scale). Students will be eligible for Active membership at the end of their first year in residence at the institution provided that their GPA is at least 3.5 and that they are enrolled in a Portuguese class at the time of selection to membership.

Honorary membership: This category is reserved for persons who have demonstrated through scholarship, teaching and / or service to the profession that they are earnestly interested in the promotion of the Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies.

Associate membership: This category is reserved for those persons—faculty members, community members, or students–who do not otherwise qualify for Active or Honorary membership. Local chapters may wish to use this category for the inclusion of exceptional high school students of Portuguese.

Alumni membership: This category is reserved for those individuals who have been active members during their undergraduate or graduate careers, but who are no longer members of the profession.
