Degree Requirements

Non-Thesis Degree

Available in:

  • MA in Romance Languages
    • French (Literature or Linguistics emphases available)
      • Italian
      • Portuguese
    • MA in Spanish
      • Linguistics emphasis 
      • Literature emphasis

    Requirements

    • 33 hours of coursework required - 11 courses (excluding those numbered 7000, 7005, 7010, or 7300).
      • If enrolling in the linguistics option, 6 of the 11 courses must be in linguistics.
    • 12 hours of coursework must be in courses only open to graduate students (no split level courses)
    • Designation advisory committee with assistance of graduate program advisor
    • Demonstrate knowledge of one relevant foreign language (other than English). Demonstrated by either receiving a grade of B or better in a foreign language courses number 2002 or higher, or passing a language examination offered by a language department at UGA.
    • Completion of ROML 7700 - Romance Languages Pedagogy - if you are on assistantship. This course counts as one of the 11 courses.
    • Comprehensive examination
      • If enrolling in the linguistics option, the examination will cover a reading list in linguistics.
    • Defense of examination

      Requirements

      • 27 hours of coursework required - 9 courses (excluding those numbered 7000, 7005, 7010, or 7300).
        • If enrolling in the linguistics option, 6 of the 9 courses must be in language or linguistics.
      • Completion of ROML 7700 which counts towards 27 hours
      • Minimum of 3 hours of FREN 7300, ROML 7300 or SPAN 7300 - this is a preparation for writing thesis.
      • 12 hours of coursework must be in courses only open to graduate students
      • Designation advisory committee with assistance of graduate program advisor
      • Demonstrate knowledge of one relevant foreign language (other than English). Demonstrated by either receiving a grade of B or better in a foreign language courses number 2002 or higher, or passing a language examination offered by a language department at UGA.
