“Phonological closeness between phonetically distinct vowel phonemes” Standard Italian has seven vowels: /i e ɛ a o ɔ u/. But how strong is the distinction between /e/ vs. /ɛ/ and /o/ vs. /ɔ/? The Romance Linguistics Colloquium Series is a forum for current research in linguistics by students and faculty. Presenters are typically allotted 20 minutes for the presentation and 10 additional minutes for questions.
