Introduction to Spanish Linguistics

Fundamentals of language in general and Spanish in particular. Linguistic knowledge, language variation, and language contact phenomena. Representative Spanish sound systems, syllabic structure, sentence patterns, and structure and meaning of words. Analysis of data from oral and written registers. Given in Spanish.

This course will be taught 95% or more online.

Students of Spanish benefit greatly from taking LING 2100 "The Study of Language" prior to, or in the same semester as, SPAN 3050 to gain an understanding of fundamental properties of language and basic principles of the study of linguistics, while broadening their awareness of the nature and diversity of world languages.

(SPAN 3010 or SPAN 3010H or SPAN 3011) and (SPAN 3020 or SPAN 3020H)
