PhD Candidate, Hispanic Linguistics, Teaching Assistant of Spanish

My name is Graham Johnson and I am PhD Candidate in Hispanic Linguistics here at UGA. I also serve as an Instructor of Record in the Spanish program (SPAN 1001/1002/1110/2001/2002/3050). My dissertation research deals with the use of evaluation and stancetaking as resources for gay identity construction in interaction. My main field of study is pragmatics, with specific interest in discourse analytical methods, discourse markers, pragmatic variation, and expression of deictic reference in interactive contexts. Other areas of interest that influence my work are queer linguistics, language attitudes (specifically towards inclusive language forms/lenguaje inclusivo), and historical linguistics.

Dissertation/Thesis Title:
From Atlanta to Madrid: A cross-linguistic study on stancetaking and markers of identity in gay male discourse
Education:

In 2017 I received a B.A. in Spanish from Berry College in Rome, Georgia. I then completed my M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics at UGA in 2019, where I wrote my thesis over reformulation markers in Peninsular Spanish discourse.
