CIEE Center Director, Milan, Italy

Former student of Italian and A.B. in Art History with a focus on Italian language and literature, '01 at UGA and former Director of Trinity College's Rome Campus. Motivated by the desire to have an immersive cultural exchange experience in Italy, Stephen first moved there to teach English in private and public schools after finishing his BA at the University of Georgia.

A memorable international experience at the University of Georgia was working through difficult but inspiring Italian literary texts with Professor Tom Peterson and my fellow classmates. Many of those poetic and narrative texts and the conversations we had about them have remained with me along the way. At UGA, I majored in Art History and was just a credit or so short of a minor in Italian. Nevertheless, I ended up dedicating my career to Italian Studies and making Italy my home.

He holds a Ph.D. in Italian Studies from Brown University and a MA in Italian from Middlebury College. Stephen has worked in the fields of study abroad and Italian studies over the last two decades. Before entering his current position, Stephen served as Assistant Director of the Brown University in Bologna study abroad program and Manager of Short Term Programs and Global Initiatives in the Office of International Programs at Brown University. Stephen’s research and teaching interests include twentieth century Italian visual arts and literature, and in particular Italian Futurism. He is currently researching the intersection between Futurism and popular science at the turn of the century.
