Romance Languages Colloquium

The Romance Languages Colloquium is a series of free, open to the public events organized by graduate students of the Department. The spirit of the event is to share our department’s work with the community, making us more aware of what our colleagues do and giving us the opportunity of talking to about our production.

This presentation contributes to the fields of Latin American cinema studies, cultural studies, and decolonial theory. The central aim is to explore the symbolic and narrative use of colors in the 2019 Brazilian film Bacurau. It examines how cinematic colors help retrieve shared features of Latinidad in Bacurau, while also reflecting the complexities of Afro-Indigenous Latinidad in cinematic productions. More specifically, the study analyzes how color functions as a tool to express cultural identity, social dynamics, and resistance to colonial legacies, with particular emphasis on race, gender, and environmental consciousness.
