11.23.2013: We are proud to announce that have been awarded a Learning Technologies Grant from the Center for Teaching and Learning in order to train advanced undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in linguistics in the use of eyetracking equipment for the analysis of the perception and acquisition of key grammatical properties of several languages currently taught at the University of Georgia. Linguistics Processing Lab
This facility, located in Gilbert 119 (146 sq. ft.), has three PC workstations (Dell Optiplex 745) and two Mac Mini workstations, each with software for linguistic (e.g., Praat, Wordsmith Tools and MonoConc), psycholinguistic (E-Prime 2.0, 2 licenses and Superlab), statistical analysis (R), and three serial response pads. This room is used mainly for data collection and for individual work among students and faculty.
Phonetics and Perceptual Studies Lab and Eye-tracker Facility
This lab currently shares space in the Recording Studio in Gilbert 120 (605 sq. ft.); this facility includes a 6' x 6' Netwell Elite Series sound-attenuated recording booth with a PC recording station consisting of a Dell Optiplex 990 with Dual Screen Display, a Sound Devices USBPre Microphone Interface, and a Shure Beta 53 Professional Headworn Microphone for the collection of laboratory quality data for phonetics and phonological research, and three workstations with specialized software and equipment for recording and conducting perceptual studies.
This facility also houses a SensoMotoric Instruments Red-M Portable Eye-tracker for use in psycholinguistic experiments, and is equipped with one PC workstation. Data are backed up to Western Digital External Hard drives (total 2 terabytes). All computer equipment is maintained by IT staff affiliated with the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia.

Additional resources include a selection of digital recorders (2 Tascam HD-P2 Portable Stereo Audio Recorders, 3 Tascam DR-1 Portable Digital Recorders, and 3 M-Audio Microtrack II Professional 2-Channel Digital Recorders), preamps (3 Sound Devices USBPre Microphone Interface units and 2 Sound Devices MixPre units), microphones (3 Shure WH20 XLR Headworn Dynamic mics, 5 Shure Beta 53 Professional Headworn mics, 2 Earthworks M30 Measurement mics, and 2 Behringer EXM8000 Ominidirectional Measurement mics), video recorders (2 Panasonic HC-X900M High Definitional Video Cameras), and a PC laptop for field recording and analysis (Dell Latitude D620). There are corpora stored on CDs from the Linguistics Data Consortium and up until 2014, all faculty and staff can access online corpora from the LDC.
Linguistics Teaching Lab
Located in Gilbert 121 (479 sq. ft.), this lab is used for linguistics research, teaching and training. The lab/classroom is equipped with a teacher’s station and 12 student workstations (Dell Optiplex) each with Sennheiser HD 280 Professional Headphones for recording, analysis, and testing, and specialized software installed for transcription, corpus analysis, and statistics. The room also has overhead a computer projector and screen. Faculty may schedule classes in this room and students may use the lab when not in use for classroom teaching.
