Congratulations to Hispanic Linguistics PhD student Camila Lívio Emidio on being awarded the prestigious James L. Carmon scholarship for her usage of digital resources in her doctoral dissertation on "Digital Technology meets Romance Linguistics: The Use of Computer-Based Methods for the Study of Language." As she summarizes, "in my research I construct corpora (e.g. a collection of texts) from various cyber social spaces, such as social media and online customer reviews, in order to have a better understanding of the mechanisms of these languages regarding the use of affective language, a linguistic phenomenon that reflects how speakers interact with the real world." She hopes that her research will contribute not only to the growing body of literary on language changes due to digital media, but also to the development of language teaching strategies and tools for engaging with both the realities of contemporary language use and language students' own social lives.
