The Portuguese Program at the University of Georgia is set to enhance its commitment to the Portuguese language and culture with the establishment of Sigma Pi Lambda, a new chapter of Phi Lambda Beta, a Collegiate Honor Society of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. This initiative aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the Portuguese language and Luso-Afro-Brazilian cultures among students and faculty alike.

Approved recently, Sigma Pi Lambda seeks to stimulate interest in advanced studies related to Portuguese language, literature, and the diverse cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. The society's core objectives include rewarding outstanding academic achievements and strengthening connections between Portuguese faculty, students, and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).

The chapter advisor, Dr. Cris Lira, would like to recognize undergraduate Portuguese major student Sibel Olcal whose dedication and leadership played a vital role in this initiative. After attending the Portuguese Middlebury Summer School in 2022, Sibel learned about the national society, and she has worked diligently to make our program at the University of Georgia house one of its chapters. Dr. Lira and Olcal are excited about the opportunities this society will create for students and for the recognition of the Portuguese program at the University of Georgia.
