Portuguese Classes Receive Renowned Brazilian Musicians

Portuguese students in the Department of Romance Languages had the privilege of receiving Brazilian percussionist Bill Lucas and Brazilian singer Maria Kamila, lead singer of Perrengue’s band, last week to learn about Brazilian rhythms. Students were invited to join in by singing and reproducing the rhythms they learned, clapping their hands, and moving their bodies. One of the rhythms they explored was coco de roda. Coco is the Portuguese word for coconut, and it is called coco de roda because people play it while standing in a circle, moving their hands and bodies to beat of the music. This rhythm has a repetitive musical beat and calls for a response by the group.  Bill Lucas’ visit to Portuguese classes was sponsored by the Portuguese Flagship Program, which allowed him to offer a workshop series open to all students and the community interested in learning about Brazilian beats.

Bill Lucas is a Brazilian percussionist and drummer with vast national and international experience, both in the studio and on stage. He toured Brazil with various artists and groups, and also in countries such as England, France, and Spain. He has played and recorded with singers such as Lô Borges, Beto Guedes, Samuel Rosa (Skank), Jota Quest, among many others. He is also a percussion teacher, having taught several courses and workshops in Brazil and abroad.

Maria Kamila is a Brazilian singer from the state of Paraíba. In 2019, she participated in The Voice Brazil, a singing reality competition television series, where she gained national recognition for her powerful voice.
