New Portuguese Learning Society at the University of Georgia: SIGMA PI LAMBDA The Portuguese Program at the University of Georgia is set to enhance its commitment to the Portuguese language and culture with the establishment of Sigma Pi Lambda, a new chapter of Phi Lambda Beta, a Collegiate Honor Society of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Djamila Ribeiro visits campus, challenges lecture attendees to complicate their worldviews On Oct. 17, the Black feminist scholar Djamila Ribeiro visited the University of Georgia’s campus to speak about her new book Where We Stand — her first work translated into English. “Seeing my work translated into English has been particularly rewarding as it allows my ideas to resonate with a broader audience while maintaining the core of what’s rooted in my experiences as a Black woman in Brazil,” Ribeiro said. Calligram Workshop In honor of this year's National French Week, the Romance Languages Department is inviting you to a Calligram Workshop. A calligram is a piece of text in which the design and layout of the letters creates a visual image related to the meaning of the words themselves. In this workshop, you will learn about the history of this art form in France and, most importantly, you will be guided through the creation of your own calligram. Material will be provided. FIFA Night at Tate In honor of this year's French National Week, the Romance Languages Department is inviting you to an eSport evening at The Tate Gameroom. Come to play or to watch people play the latest version of the famous soccer game franchise FIFA. France is both a famous soccer nation and a major eSport nation that our department is proud to highlight during this event. Pétanque Afternoon at Lay Park In honor of the National French Week, the Romance Languages department is inviting you to join us and the Classic City Pétanque Club for an afternoon of “boules”. You can come anytime between 1:30 and 4:30pm. The Classic City Club volunteers will be there to provide all the equipment and to train anyone who is coming to discover this traditional French sport. Call for Artwork: "France is not Paris" In honor of this year's National French Week, the Romance Languages department is inviting anyone on campus to submit an original piece of art on the theme "France is not Paris". To be featured in this collaborative art exhibit, please either bring your work or send your work before November 12th to Leah Hall (leah.hall@uga.edu) who works at the front desk in the lobby of Gilbert Hall.
